How can I grill safely and without making my neighbors crazy?
Charcoaled burgers, roasted ears of corn, and barbecued ribs are some of the joys of Summer. Burned out rear porches are not. Please remember some simple rules when you light up the grill:
- Never grill under wooden overhangs or on porches. It's not safe. It's also a violation of your lease if you rent.
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Dispose of ashes and cold coals in a designated container. If your building doesn't have one, ask for it. NOTE: never dispose of hot coals by dumping them in a garbage chute or trash container. Hot coals are defined as those which give off any amount of heat when you touch them with your bare hand. Even a small amount of heat is sufficient to start a fire and smouldering coals cause as many porch fires as active flames.
- Never leave a grill unattended.
- Never use starter fluid to ignite the coals. You can buy an inexpensive, highly effective starter chimney at a local hardware or kitchen store.
- Use an ash catcher under the grill.
- NOTE: many buildings are banning grilling because of offensive odors and fire hazards. If you want to keep grilling, think SAFETY!
