Extension cords
When using electrical extension cords remember these tips:

  1. Use the appropriate extension cord. If the item you need the cord for has a three-prong plug (i.e. has a grounding wire), make sure you use a cord with a three-hole connector. Never plug a three-prong plug into a two-hole connector.
  2. Always use cords that are in good repair. A faulty extension cord is one that shows any cracking at all or any evidence of electrical burns on the plug. All electrical cords crack over time because of the heat produced by the electricity passing through the wires. Any electrical cord over 7 years old should be replaced.
  3. Extension cords must be kept in open areas (not under rugs) where they can stay cool. They should be kept clean and away from any combustible material, such as draperies or any kind of paper.
  4. No extension cord should be used with any appliance, such as an air conditioner or refrigerator.
