Before you install window air conditioners in your unit, check with your property manager to make sure you comply with your building's rules. Some associations and landlords limit the placement of air conditioners as well as the months when they can be in place. Also, make certain you have sufficient electrical power for the model you have chosen.
Your room air conditioner makes hot weather living more comfortable 3 ways:
Muscling some 75 pounds of air conditioner into a window isn't exactly a snap. But making sure the unit is appropriate for the size of the window opening and making adjustments for storm window frames can ease the process.
Many air conditioners are designed to fit regular double-hung windows having openings between 24 1/4" and 37". Removal of one or both of the side curtain assemblies permits installation in narrower openings. Window kits may be purchased to allow installation of units in windows with openings as wide as 48".
The bottom frame of a storm window sometimes interferes with installation. A shim (wooden board) cut to the exact window opening width and fastened securely to the window stool, raises the unit enough to clear the storm window frame. The shim should be thick enough to provide approximately 1/4" clearance between the bottom of the unit and storm window frame.
After checking the window size and making any adjustments for storm window frames, center the unit horizontally in the window. Butt the bottom channel of the air conditioner against the outside edge of the window stool. Pull the lower sash down between the cabinet and the window frame. Expand both curtain assemblies into the window sash tracks. Place a strip of foam rubber window seal between the top rail of the lower window sash and upper windowpane. The addition of rope caulk in crevices and small openings will help complete the seal.
At the height of the cooling season, you should inspect the filter every week to make sure it is not clogged with dust. A clogged filter should be washed or vacuumed depending upon the manufacturer's instructions. A clogged, dirty filter will reduce the operating efficiency of your unit and contribute to frosting over of the indoor (evaporator) coil. If this should occur, make sure filter is clean and air passages are not obstructed by draperies or furniture. Air conditioners are more likely to "frost" when the outside temperature is relatively low. This may be prevented by adjusting the thermostat to a warmer setting. Should frosting still continue, operate on fan only until the coil is free of frost.
Condensation on the indoor grille may occur on humid days when the unit is first started. Keep doors and windows closed during operation and the moisture should quickly evaporate. On exceptionally hot or humid days, you may notice water dripping from the rear of the unit. This is normal and merely means the room air conditioner is doing its job - cooling and dehumidifying the room.
